If you find yourself in Beijing during the Chinese New Year, the Changdian Temple Fair (厂甸庙会) is a fantastic way to soak in the festive atmosphere. Located just south of Tian’anmen Square, this historic fair dates back centuries and continues to be one of the city’s most vibrant events.

As one among the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage items, this temple fair dates back to the Jiajing period (1522-1566) of the Ming Dynasty and has been held annually for over 400 years. It’s a lively mix of food, performances, and market stalls, drawing both locals and visitors eager to celebrate the holiday season.

This year was my first time visiting the Changdian Temple Fair, and I was excited to experience a different side of Beijing’s New Year celebrations.

Last year, I went to the Ditan Temple Fair, which had a grander scale but a more structured feel. In contrast, Changdian felt more intimate, with its mix of bustling streets, hidden hutongs, and historic courtyards filled with stalls and decorations.

Getting There

Changdian Temple Fair takes place along Liulichang Street in Xuanwu District. The easiest way to get there is by taking Subway Line 2 to Hepingmen Station and walking a short distance south (around 400 meters) to the fairgrounds. Since this is a popular event, expect crowds, especially during peak hours.

What to Expect

The fair is split across two sides of the road, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll through both the main street and the hidden corners of the hutongs. As I wandered through the narrow alleyways and courtyards, I loved discovering all the little details—red lanterns swaying in the wind, shop windows filled with intricate calligraphy, and the scent of roasted chestnuts lingering in the air.

It felt like stepping back in time, especially with stalls selling traditional Chinese goods like art, calligraphy, antiques, tea, and ornaments.

Food and Festivities

One of the highlights is the food. Vendors have stalls set up around the hutong alley, offering an array of Beijing street snacks like tanghulu (candied hawthorn), jianbing (savory crepes), and hot soy milk and porridge.

Beyond shopping and eating, the fair also showcases cultural performances, including Beijing opera, acrobatics, and magic shows, bringing a lively energy to the streets. The air is filled with the sounds of traditional music and cheerful chatter.

Why Visit?

What makes the Changdian Temple Fair special isn’t just the food or the performances—it’s the atmosphere. The streets are adorned with red lanterns and festive decorations, and there’s an undeniable energy as people celebrate the arrival of the new year. Whether you’re shopping for a unique piece of calligraphy, enjoying a street performance, or simply soaking in the ambiance, the fair offers a memorable and immersive cultural experience.

For me, the best part was simply walking through the fair, feeling the lively energy of Beijing in the New Year. The mix of history, culture, and community spirit made it an unforgettable experience, and I already know I’ll be back next year.

About the 2025 Changdian Temple Fair

Opening hours: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

If you’re in Beijing during the first lunar month, don’t miss the chance to visit this historic fair. It’s a great way to experience both the festive spirit of Chinese New Year and the city’s cultural heritage firsthand.

Winter Activities in Beijing: 12 Best Things To Do https://rachelmeetschina.com/2025/01/17/winter-activities-in-beijing-12-best-things-to-do/ https://rachelmeetschina.com/2025/01/17/winter-activities-in-beijing-12-best-things-to-do/#respond Fri, 17 Jan 2025 02:56:44 +0000 https://rachelmeetschina.com/?p=22219

Beijing in winter is an enchanting mix of outdoor fun, cozy indoor activities, and festive traditions. Whether you want to explore icy landscapes, savor hearty meals, or relax in hot springs, here are some top activities you can enjoy every year.

As an expat who has called Beijing home for six years, this list features some of my favorite winter activities that I return to year after year.

It’s a carefully curated mix of classic tourist experiences, traditional Chinese culture, unique local finds, and exciting adventures that showcase the best of what Beijing has to offer during the colder months.

OVERVIEW

What to Expect in Beijing During Winter

Beijing’s winter, stretching from early November to early March, is known for its cold and dry conditions. While temperatures often dip below freezing, the dry air and frequent sunny days make it a great season for sightseeing.

You should prepare for the cold with proper winter gear, including boots, thermal layers, and warm accessories. Layers are your best friend!

Avoid Chinese New Year time! This will be peak travel time in China for people traveling to see their family or taking trips in China. Beijing get’s very busy especially at tourist sites like the Forbidden City, Bell and Drum Towers, Qianmen, and more.

Outside of Chinese New Year time, Beijing during the winter can be more calm and nice for visiting. Just remember warm clothes!

Top Things to Do in Beijing During Winter

1. Ice Bicycling and Skating in Beijing

If there’s one quintessential winter activity in Beijing, it’s ice bicycling across the lakes that freeze during the winter time! Many lakes and parks in Beijing offer a ticket where you can walk across the lake and rent an ice bicycle or skates. There are many indoor rinks as well at places like the China World Summit Mall.

  • Shichahai Lake (什刹海): In Xicheng District, offering scenic views of hutongs and local culture.
  • Olympic Park (奥林匹克公园): A spacious spot in Chaoyang District, perfect for families.
  • Summer Palace (颐和园): Kunming Lake in Haidian District, surrounded by imperial architecture, offers a picturesque backdrop.

2. Skiing and Snowboarding

For the winter sports enthusiasts in China, there are many ski and snowboarding locations on the outskirts of Beijing and in the nearby Hebei Province. Hit the slopes at these top ski resorts near Beijing:

  • Nanshan Ski Resort (南山滑雪场): Located in Miyun District, about 1.5 hours from downtown Beijing. It’s great for all skill levels.
  • Huaibei International Ski Resort (怀北国际滑雪场): Nestled in the mountains of Huairou District, this resort offers skiing with Great Wall views.
  • Chongli (崇礼): Just a high-speed train ride to Hebei Province, this area hosted the 2022 Winter Olympics and offers world-class ski facilities.

I went snowboarding at Chongli in December 2023 – read my guide here.

3. Longqing Gorge Ice Lantern Festival (龙庆峡冰灯节)

The Longqing Gorge Ice Lantern Festival features a Lantern Area (灯笼区) and Ice Lantern Art Area (冰灯艺术区) with stunning displays of lights and ice sculptures. It’s fantastic and a great way to have the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival experience without trekking all the way up to Heilongjiang. The festival also has Glacier Canyon Winter sports activities (冰川峡谷趣味运动会).

  • Location: North of Gucheng Village, Jiuxian Town, Yanqing District (北京市延庆区旧县镇古城村北)
  • Duration: Early to mid-January to February 28, 2025 (subject to change every year)

4. Hot Springs in Beijing (北京温泉)

Unwind in one of Beijing’s many hot springs, where you can relax in outdoor heated pools or hang out in the indoor hot stone room. These hot springs are really like giant outdoor hot tubs where you can hang out with friends and family. Many of them are even hotels if you wanted to book to stay overnight.

My favorite one in Beijing is the No.9 Hot Spring International Hotel, located in East Beijing. For 398 RMB you can get 18 hours entrance inside, which include the hot springs, hot stone room, change of clothes, a buffet, video games, chill lounge rooms, and more.

There are so many hot springs in Beijing, though, so you have plenty of options! Use Trip.com to search and check out their list of Top 17 Hot Springs in Beijing or you can search in Chinese on Dianping (if you don’t use Chinese, just use a translator to screenshot and search the options).

Here are some of my favorite options:

1. Hanjin Bai Hot Spring International Hotel (瀚金佰九号温泉国际酒店)

📍 Address: No. 9 Huihe South St, Chaoyang District (北京市朝阳区惠河南街9号)

2. Chunhui Garden Hot Spring Resort (春晖园温泉度假酒店)

📍 Location: Shunyi District (顺义区)

3. Haide Hot Spring Bath, Chaoyang Joy City (海德温泉洗浴, 朝阳大悦城店)

📍 Address: 2nd Floor, Building 2, Qingnian Road West (北京市朝阳区青年路西里1号院2号楼)

5. Beijing Lantern Festival: Megalights Wonderland

Experience dazzling lights at Wenyuhe Park (温榆河公园) in Chaoyang District. Read more here: Beijing Lantern Festival 2025: A Bright Start to the Chinese New Year

  • Location: No. 1 Gate, Wenyuhe Park, Chaoyang District (北京市朝阳区温榆河公园1号门)
  • Duration: December 28, 2024 – March 9, 2025

6. Temple Fairs (庙会)

Celebrate Spring Festival at temple fairs, featuring performances, crafts, and festive food.

  • Ditan Temple Fair (地坛庙会): Held in Andingmen, Dongcheng District (东城区安定门).
  • Temple of Heaven Fair (天坛庙会): In Dongcheng District (东城区).

7. Old Beijing New Year Goods Fair (老北京年货大集)

This is the go-to spot for many local Beijingers to buy food, gifts, and decorations before Chinese New Year. Spanning 15,000 square meters, this market is held at Beijing’s National Agricultural Exhibition Center in Chaoyang District. You’ll find special products, cultural heritage items, snacks, pastries, clothing, decorations, and more.

  • Location: National Agricultural Exhibition Center, Chaoyang District (朝阳区全国农业展览馆)
  • Duration: January 13 – February 6, 2025

8. Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium Ice and Snow Festival

Every year the iconic Bird’s Nest Stadium transforms into a winter playground with snow slides, bumper cars, and obstacle courses. Perfect for families and adventure seekers, it’s open now through mid-February 2025. This year is the 14th year this event is being held (第14届鸟巢欢乐冰雪季).

  • 📍 Location: National Stadium (鸟巢), Northwest Entrance (国家体育场西北入口)
  • ⏰ Time: Now – mid-February 2025
  • 💰 Tickets: Weekdays: 86 RMB, Weekends: 128 RMB

9. Try Local Winter Foods

Beijing Hot Pot

Warm up with a comforting meal of Beijing-style hot pot (北京火锅), featuring lamb, fresh vegetables, and sesame dipping sauces. Look for hot pot restaurants near Guijie (簋街), Beijing’s famous food street.

Tanghulu

Try a Tanghulu (糖葫芦): These sweet, tangy candied hawthorn sticks are sold at street stalls and are a popular snack during winter in northern China. You’ll find these all over Beijing, especially near tourist attractions and in the hutongs near the Beijing Drum and Bell towers and the Lama Temple.

Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Eat Roasted Sweet Potatoes (烤红薯): Warm and delicious, these are a winter favorite across Beijing.

Go on a Beijing Food Tour

If you want more delicious food in Beijing with an awesome guide, I recommend taking a Beijing food tour with Lost Plate Food Tours, which take you to local favorites like dumplings, Beijing hot pot, and jianbing (Chinese crepes). Tours are also available in Chengdu, Xi’an, Shanghai, and more.

10. Cyber Dance (赛博跳动)

Get out of the cold and try the “Floor is Lava” game or other interactive grid games at Cyber Dance! Beijing also has many other malls and indoor arcade games perfect to escape the cold.

Location: Cyber Dance, Olympic Forest Park Branch (奥森店), Chaoyang District (北京市朝阳区)

11. Acrobatic Performances (杂技表演)

Book through Show Beijing (秀北京) for discounted tickets to breathtaking performances like:

  • Beijing Opera (京剧)
  • Flying Acrobatics (飞翔杂技)
  • Golden Mask Dynasty Show (金面王朝)

Locations: Various theaters such as Chaoyang Theater (朝阳剧场) and Tianqiao Performing Arts Center (天桥艺术中心).

12. Catch a Bejing Snowfall

I’ve included this one last because it’s not a guarantee, but experiencing Beijing in snow is a magical experience! Over the years I’ve been able to catch some incredible sights during snowfall, including the Great Wall. The Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven. The hutongs are also wonderful for a walk around in snow.

But it only snows 1-3 times a winter season on average, so it’s really hard to predict or plan your trip for snow in Beijing. I’ve been here 6 winters now which is the only way I’ve been lucky enough to see the forecast and plan an activity.

Beijiing Winter Activities

Beijing in winter offers an incredible mix of cultural traditions, outdoor fun, and warm escapes. With activities like skiing, festivals, and hot springs, there’s something for everyone. Be sure to check specific dates and locations for annual events!

And of course, there are still all the other traditional things to do in Beijing – the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and more!

Beijing Gubei Water Town and Simatai Great Wall Guide https://rachelmeetschina.com/2024/10/30/beijing-gubei-water-town-and-simatai-great-wall-guide/ https://rachelmeetschina.com/2024/10/30/beijing-gubei-water-town-and-simatai-great-wall-guide/#respond Wed, 30 Oct 2024 04:19:44 +0000 https://rachelmeetschina.com/?p=21484 If you’re looking for an unforgettable day trip from Beijing, Gubei Water Town is an ideal choice. Nestled at the foot of the Simatai Great Wall, Gubei Water Town offers a unique blend of ancient Chinese architecture, scenic canal views, and authentic cultural experiences.

Gubei Water Town is a beautiful destination throughout the year, offering unique seasonal charms that make each visit memorable. However, autumn is one of the best times to visit, as the landscape transforms with rich hues of red, orange, and yellow, which reflect off the canals and frame the historic architecture, so I highly recommend planning a trip here then!

Here’s everything you need to know to plan your trip, from getting there to enjoying a peaceful boat ride along the canals and hiking the Simatai Great Wall.

Getting to Gubei Water Town

There are two main ways to reach Gubei Water Town from Beijing: by bus or private taxi.

  1. By Bus: The best way by public transportation is to take a direct bus from Dongzhimen Bus Terminal, which offers daily routes to Gubei Water Town. The bus ride takes approximately 2 hours and costs around 48 RMB per person one-way. Plan to leave early in the morning to make the most of your time at the town and the Simatai Great Wall. Note: You need to line up for the bus and pay on the spot, and cannot book in advance. This makes it difficult if you are traveling with a large group – you cannot guarantee if seats will be available.
  2. By Private Taxi: For a more personalized and flexible experience, hiring a private taxi is a good option. This will cost more, typically between 1000-1300 RMB round-trip, depending on your negotiation skills and season. While this is more expensive than the bus, it allows you to control your schedule and may be worth it for groups or families looking for convenience.

If you’re seeking a recommendation or want to connect with a local Beijing driver, I have a service in Beijing I can connect you with. I’ve booked several trips with this company, and they will help arrange a car for you according to the destination you want to visit and how many people are with you.

You can add my WeChat below and I will share the contact info with you. Alternatively, the driver service also uses WhatsApp (I currently do not). You can send me a DM on Instagram (@rachelmeetschina) or drop me an email (rachellynnweiss@gmail.com) and I can connect you.

Entrance Fees and Tickets

To fully experience Gubei Water Town, make sure you’re aware of the ticket options:

  • Entrance Ticket: 140 RMB for an adult ticket. This ticket gives you access to the entire water town, allowing you to explore the beautifully preserved architecture, winding canals, and cultural exhibits.
  • Boat Ride: For an additional 80 RMB, you can enjoy a serene boat ride through the canals. The boat ride is a must-try, offering a unique perspective of the town’s picturesque water views. Each boat can hold a small group, making it ideal for families or friends to experience together.

Highlights of Gubei Water Town

Gubei Water Town is known for its traditional Chinese architecture and immersive cultural attractions. Here are a few must-see highlights:

  • Yongshun Dye House: This ancient dye house allows visitors to try their hand at traditional dyeing techniques. It’s a fun way to experience local craftsmanship and take home a one-of-a-kind souvenir.
  • Sima Liquor Distillery: Here, you can learn about the art of Chinese baijiu-making and sample a variety of unique flavors. It’s an excellent spot for foodies or those interested in China’s culinary traditions.
  • Water Town Canal: A walk along the canals in Gubei Water Town is simply breathtaking, especially during mid to late October when the vibrant fall colors reflect off the water.

Staying Overnight in Gubei Water Town

To fully appreciate Gubei Water Town and the Simatai Great Wall, consider spending a night at one of the town’s charming guesthouses or hotels. Staying overnight allows you to enjoy the town in the early morning or evening, avoiding the peak daytime crowds.

  • Wtown Hotel: This is a comfortable, family-friendly option with spacious rooms and modern amenities. It’s close to the water town’s main attractions, so you’ll have easy access to everything.
  • Gubei Zhiguang Hot Spring Hotel: For a more luxurious stay, this hotel features hot springs and traditional architecture, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.

Hiking the Simatai Great Wall

Simatai is a scenic section of the Great Wall, with breathtaking views and steep climbs that showcase the Wall’s architectural marvel. Since it’s a quieter section compared to the more tourist-heavy spots like Badaling, Simatai offers a more authentic experience. Simatai is one of the only sections you can hike on at night as well.

  1. Ticket Cost and Hours: The ticket for the Simatai Great Wall is approximately 40 RMB. The best time to visit is either in the early morning or late afternoon to catch the sunrise or sunset, which highlights the fall colors beautifully.
  2. Cable Car: If you prefer not to hike the steep inclines, the cable car is available for an additional fee (usually around 120 RMB round-trip). The cable car ride provides a fantastic aerial view of the Great Wall and the surrounding landscape, especially when the autumn leaves are in full color.
  3. Autumn Foliage: Mid to late October is ideal for visiting the Simatai Great Wall, as the mountains are covered in stunning shades of red, orange, and yellow. The autumn colors contrast beautifully with the Wall, making it a perfect spot for photography.

Tips for Visiting in October

  • Weather: October weather in this area is typically mild but can get chilly, especially in the evening. Be sure to dress in layers and bring a warm jacket.
  • Photography: Bring a good camera! The combination of ancient architecture, colorful foliage, and scenic landscapes make for some incredible shots.
  • Plan for Crowds: While October is a beautiful time to visit, it’s also quite popular. If you’re visiting during the National Holiday (first week of October), plan for larger crowds. Booking tickets and accommodations in advance is highly recommended.

Take a Trip to Gubei Water Town

Visiting Gubei Water Town and the Simatai Great Wall in October is a truly enchanting experience, where history, nature, and Chinese culture blend seamlessly. With the right planning, you can enjoy the beauty of the autumn leaves, explore the canals, and walk along the ancient stones of the Great Wall all in one day. Whether you’re visiting for a day or staying overnight, this trip will leave you with unforgettable memories and stunning photos.

Which Section of the Great Wall Is Best To Visit? https://rachelmeetschina.com/2024/08/27/which-section-of-the-great-wall-should-you-visit/ https://rachelmeetschina.com/2024/08/27/which-section-of-the-great-wall-should-you-visit/#comments Tue, 27 Aug 2024 03:22:34 +0000 http://rachelmeetschina.com/?p=11002 The Great Wall of China is an awe-inspiring marvel and a must-see if you’re in Beijing. However, what many people don’t realize is that there are actually many different sections of the Great Wall you can visit.

With so many sections to choose from, picking the best one to visit can feel overwhelming. But don’t worry—if you’re wondering which section to explore, read on!

Having lived in Beijing since 2018, I’ve visited the Great Wall around 20 times now (no joke!) and I’ve been to many of the different sections of the wall. Each have unique features and characteristics that will fit best the experience you want.  I’ve summed up the pros and cons of each part based on my experiences to help you choose which section is best for you. No matter which section you visit though you won’t be disappointed!

Before choosing which section of the Great Wall to hike, consider:

  • Hiking difficulty
  • Restored or unrestored sections
  • Transportation options
  • Distance from Beijing
  • Time of year
  • Crowd levels
  • Travel companions (children, elderly, etc.)

Overview of Famous Sections of the Great Wall near Beijing:

*I have just listed the sections I have personally been to – I still need to check off some more!

How To Visit the Great Wall?

One of the biggest questions I’m asked by visitors is how to visit the Great Wall when in Beijing. While it is possible to reach some sections of the Great Wall using public transport (listed below), I usually prefer and recommend hiring a car for the day. It’s far more convenient, allowing for pick-up and drop-off at your preferred locations and letting you go at your own pace. The driver will wait for you while you hike and then take you back when you’re ready.

If you’re looking for a recommendation or want to connect with a local Beijing driver, I can put you in touch with a reliable service. I’ve booked several trips with this company, and they can arrange a car based on your destination and group size.

You can add my WeChat below and I will share the contact info with you. Alternatively, the driver service also uses WhatsApp (I currently do not). You can send me a DM on Instagram (@rachelmeetschina) or drop me an email (rachellynnweiss@gmail.com) and I can connect you.

Recommendations for Which Section to Visit

Overall, each section is unique and beautiful, and you’ll have a great time seeing the Great Wall! Which section you should visit ultimately depends on yourself and the experience you want. Based on my own personal experiences, here’s what I’d recommend. Read more about each section below.

  • Best Views and Hiking: Jinshanling, Wild Sections
  • Less Crowded: Huanghuacheng, Jinshanling, Wild Sections
  • First-Time Visitors to China: Mutianyu or Jinshanling
  • Most Interesting and Fun: Mutianyu
  • Cheapest Option and Easiest Transportation: Badaling
  • Challenging and Unique: Camping on the Wall
  • Best for a Unique Experience out of Beijing: Old Dragon’s Head (Laolongtou)
  • Best for History Enthusiasts: Juyongguan
  • Best Weekend Getaway: Simatai with Gubei Water Town

Badaling Section of the Great Wall

Badaling, located 43 miles (70 km) from Beijing, is the most famous section of the Great Wall for Chinese tourists and is easily accessible by a low-cost public train from Beijing. Here, you can find the famous Chairman Mao saying inscribed on one of the watchtowers: “不到长城非好汉” (Bú dào Chángchéng fēi hǎohàn), which translates to “He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man.”

Pros:

  • Close to Beijing: Conveniently located, making it quick and easy to reach.
  • Affordable: Accessible by public train at a low cost.
  • Beautiful Hike: Features both north and south sides that are well-restored and offer scenic views.
  • Cable Cars: Available for those who prefer a less strenuous visit.

Cons:

Crowds: Its popularity means that it can get very crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. If you want a quieter experience, consider visiting during off-peak times.

I do not recommend visiting Badaling, unless you are extremely short on time. While it’s close to Beijing, it is always very crowded when I visit!

Mutianyu Section of the Great Wall

The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is a popular choice due to its relatively close proximity to Beijing and its unique attractions, such as the toboggan slide down from the Wall. Located about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Beijing, it typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to reach by car or public transport. Mutianyu offers a range of dining options, including Subway for familiar fare and local Chinese restaurants for a taste of traditional cuisine.

Pros:

  • Close to Beijing: Convenient for visitors who don’t want to travel far.
  • Toboggan Slide: One of the coolest attractions, allowing a fun and memorable descent from the Wall.
  • Easy Hike: The section is less strenuous, making it suitable for those who prefer a lighter hike.
  • Family-Friendly: Ideal for families and groups looking for a hassle-free experience.
  • Cable Cars: Two different cable car options are available for ascending and descending the Wall.

Cons:

  • Crowds: Like Badaling, Mutianyu can be quite popular, leading to potential congestion and difficulty finding photo spots without people, especially during peak times.

I recommend Mutianyu to first time visitors, as it’s an enjoyable section of the wall and not far from Beijing.

Mutianyu is part of my 3 Day and 7 Day Beijing Itineraries, check them out!

Jinshanling Section of the Great Wall

Jinshanling is known for its stunning mountain views and enjoyable hiking – it’s often called a photographer’s paradise. Located approximately 80 miles (130 kilometers) from Beijing, it typically takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to reach by car. This section is ideal for those seeking a more tranquil and immersive experience, away from the bustling crowds that often gather at other parts of the Wall.

Pros:

  • Stunning Views: Jinshanling offers some of the most beautiful mountain scenery along the Great Wall, making it perfect for photography and nature lovers.
  • Enjoyable Hiking: The terrain provides a rewarding hike with well-preserved sections of the Wall, offering a blend of both restored and wild sections.
  • No Crowds: One of the least crowded sections, allowing you to enjoy the Wall in peace and take photos without the hassle of large groups.
  • Cable Car: For those who prefer not to hike the entire section, there is a cable car available.

Cons:

  • Limited Public Transportation: Getting to Jinshanling via public transport is challenging, so it’s recommended to book a private car, which can add to the cost and time.
  • Farther from Beijing: Its distance makes it more time-consuming to reach, requiring a longer journey compared to closer sections.

Jinshanling is my personal favorite—I’ve visited many times in different seasons, and the beauty and tranquility always impress me. I even went to the Yinyang Music Festival during the summer 2019 and had a blast.

Simatai Section (Connected to Gubei Water Town)

Simatai is a unique and picturesque section of the Great Wall that is connected to the charming Gubei Water Town approximately 75 miles (120 km) from Beijing. One of Simatai’s standout features is the opportunity to explore the Wall at night, making it one of the only sections where you can enjoy an evening visit. This, along with the quaint water town setting, makes Simatai perfect for a weekend getaway.

Pros:

  • Cable Car: For those who prefer a less strenuous visit, there’s a cable car available to take you up to the Wall.
  • Night Access: Simatai is one of the only sections of the Wall that you can visit at night, offering a unique and unforgettable experience.
  • Gubei Water Town: The adjacent water town provides a lovely setting for accommodation, dining, and exploration, making it easy to turn your visit into a relaxing weekend escape.

Cons:

  • Farther from Beijing: Simatai is located farther from the city, requiring more travel time – around 2 – 2.5 hours by car.
  • Its connection to Gubei Water Town attracts many visitors who are staying for weekend getaways, so at certain times of the year it can be more crowded.

Huanghuacheng Lakeside Section of the Great Wall

Huanghuacheng, often referred to as the Lakeside Section of the Great Wall, is a scenic and serene destination just about 40 miles (65 kilometers) north of Beijing. This section is famous for the picturesque lake that runs alongside it, creating a breathtaking backdrop. Whether you’re looking to hike, camp, or enjoy water activities like boating and kayaking, Huanghuacheng offers a variety of experiences that make it a fantastic choice for families and anyone seeking a unique Great Wall section.

Pros:

  • Close to Beijing: Conveniently located, making it easy to reach from the city.
  • Beautiful Lake Views: Offers stunning views of the lake, adding a unique element to your Great Wall visit.
  • Variety of Activities: From boating and kayaking to hiking around scenic park areas, there’s something for everyone, making it perfect for families.
  • Camping: Some Beijing tour groups offer camping here, which can be a fun and memorable experience.

Cons:

  • More Developed: Though great for families and activities, the area is more developed, which can make it feel less natural and rugged compared to other sections.
  • Weekend Crowds: While generally less crowded, it can get busier on weekends.
  • Limited Wall to Hike: This section doesn’t have as much of the Wall to explore compared to other sections.

Camping on a Wild Wall Section with Great Wall Fresh

Camping on the wild sections of the Great Wall offers a truly unique and adventurous way to experience this historic landmark. Unlike the restored and popular sections, the wild areas remain untouched and unrepaired, allowing you to see the Wall in its most natural state. During the National Holiday in 2019, I camped with Great Wall Fresh at one of these wild sections, and it was an unforgettable experience.

Pros:

  • Untouched Beauty: Wild sections are in their natural, unrepaired state, offering an authentic view of the Wall as it was centuries ago.
  • No Crowds: These areas are far less visited, allowing you to enjoy the solitude and immerse yourself in the surrounding nature.
  • In-Depth Experience: Camping here lets you experience the sunrise and sunset on the Wall, providing a deeper connection to this historic site.
  • Adventure: For those seeking a more challenging and immersive experience, wild sections offer a true adventure.

Cons:

  • Not for Everyone: This option is best suited for those who are comfortable with outdoor camping and rugged hikes, and who are looking for a truly unique way to experience the Wall.
  • Challenging Hiking: The hike is tough, with steep and uneven terrain, making it the most difficult of all the sections I’ve explored. If you are looking for a challenging hike, Custom Keychains can be handy tools. You can design a keychain with various elements, and even give it a commemorative touch.
  • Weather Exposure: You’re fully exposed to the elements, so you need to be well-prepared for anything, from rain to cold. Even with preparation, unexpected weather can pose a challenge.

Juyongguan (Juyong Pass)

Juyongguan, also known as Juyong Pass, is one of the most historically significant and strategically important sections of the Great Wall. Located about 37 miles (60 kilometers) from Beijing, Juyongguan is nestled in a valley surrounded by lush mountains, making it both accessible and scenic. This section served as a critical military stronghold, protecting Beijing from invaders during ancient times, and it remains one of the best-preserved sections of the Wall.

Pros:

  • Close to Beijing: Juyongguan is one of the closest sections to Beijing, making it a convenient option for a day trip.
  • Historical Significance: This pass played a vital role in China’s military history, offering visitors a deep sense of the Wall’s strategic importance.
  • Scenic Beauty: The pass is surrounded by beautiful mountains and greenery, providing picturesque views, especially in the spring and autumn.
  • Restored and Well-Maintained: The section is well-preserved, with restored parts that are easy to walk on, making it suitable for visitors of all ages.
  • Beautiful cherry and peach blossoms in the springtime

Cons:

  • Crowds: Due to its proximity to Beijing and historical significance, Juyongguan can get crowded, especially on weekends and holidays.
  • Limited Wall to Explore: The length of the Wall accessible at Juyongguan is shorter compared to other sections like Mutianyu or Jinshanling, offering a more condensed experience.

Laolongtou (Great Wall By The Sea)

Did you know there’s a section of the Great Wall that meets the ocean? Known as the Old Dragon’s Head (Laolongtou 老龙头), this is where the Great Wall begins its journey from the sea. Located in Hebei Province, about 2.5 hours from Beijing by train, Laolongtou offers a unique and picturesque experience, making it a perfect day trip for those looking to explore a different side of the Wall.

Pros:

  • Unique Experience: Seeing the Great Wall extend into the sea is a truly special sight, offering a different perspective than the more mountainous sections.
  • Historical Significance: As the starting point of the Great Wall, this location carries historical weight, symbolizing the Wall’s grand scale and importance.
  • Beachside Amenities: There are restaurants and shops along the beach, allowing you to relax and enjoy the seaside after exploring the Wall.

Cons:

  • Distance from Beijing: Laolongtou is not in Beijing, requiring a 2-2.5 hour train ride to Shanhaiguan 山海关, which makes it a longer day trip.
  • Time-Consuming: While it’s possible to visit in a day, the journey there and back can make for a long day, which might be tiring for some travelers.

This section is ideal for those looking for a unique and off-the-beaten-path experience of the Great Wall, combining history with the beauty of the seaside.

Which season is the best to visit the Great Wall?

Ultimately the Great Wall is an amazing sight no matter when you visit China, but the scenery around the wall looks very different depending on the season. If you’re not picky about the weather and just want a beautiful hike, go for it! But if you’re trying to plan activities or photograph certain scenes, consider the time of year that you visit.

Winter

It doesn’t snow often in Beijing, but my first trip to the Wall it snowed at Jinshanling in January 2016, also again when I went to Jinshanling in December 2019. I also caught a big snowfall in February 2024 at Badaling. It was very lovely to see, but made it a tad slippier to hike. Wear good shoes with tread so you don’t slip and pack a warm coat because it’ll be cold out in the mountains. The toboggan at Mutianyu might be closed in inclement weather, as will some cable cars, so keep that in mind as well.

Spring

In March 2019 I visited Jinshanling again, and unfortunately the mountains were still brown and hadn’t turned green again. The weather was lovely for hiking though – I had a light jacket and pants and definitely warmed up once we started hiking.

2.jpg

A month later I went to Mutianyu in mid-April, and it was a bit greener then.

Summer

Summer is a vibrant green! The scenery is stunning. It will be hot though so bring water and sunscreen.

Early Autumn (September)

I visited Badaling in September 2018 and Huanghuacheng in September 2019 and those were two of my favorite trips simply because of how green the mountains were and how beautiful the weather was for hiking. Not too hot and not rainy! The best time in my opinion.

Fall (November)

I went to Badaling again in November 2019 and the colors were lovely!

How To Hire a Driver for a Day Trip in Beijing https://rachelmeetschina.com/2024/02/26/how-to-hire-a-driver-for-a-day-trip-in-beijing/ https://rachelmeetschina.com/2024/02/26/how-to-hire-a-driver-for-a-day-trip-in-beijing/#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2024 03:49:48 +0000 https://rachelmeetschina.com/?p=19198 If you’re planning a trip to Beijing, hiring a private driver for a day trip is a great option to consider! While Beijing has a great public transportation system, including metro, buses, taxis, and ride-hailing apps, there are times when hiring a driver for a trip is more convenient.

I’ve hired drivers on multiple occasions in Beijing for trips to the Great Wall, and having a driver offers convenience and flexibility. You can plan your own itinerary, and not get stuck waiting for buses.

If you’re seeking a recommendation or want to connect with a local Beijing driver, I have a service in Beijing I can connect you with! I’ve booked several trips with this company, and they will help arrange a car for you according to the destination you want to visit and how many people are with you.

You can add my WeChat below and I will share the contact info with you.

Note: Car Service – Not An English Tour Guide Service

Just a heads-up though: this service will just help arrange a car for your trip. And while these drivers are great at navigating the city and ensuring you get where you need to be on time, they’re not your go-to for an in-depth tour guide experience. Many Beijing drivers do not speak English. Think of them as your trusty wheels for the day, but I recommend using a translation app if your Chinese is not very good.

If you are seeking an English tour guide experience, this car service won’t be for you.

scenic.jpg

Destinations to Explore

Here’s a list of popular places that you can arrange to visit when renting a driver for a day trip in Beijing:

  1. Great Wall Excursions:
  2. Historical Sites:
  3. Natural Wonders:
    • Cuandixia Village
    • Longqingxia Gorge
    • Shilin Gorge (UFO Glass Viewing Platform)
  4. Other Trips/ Half Day / Full Day Arrangements: Other sites can be arranged, or you can choose to combine several locations for a half day/full day driver rental.

Understanding the Pricing of Renting a Driver in Beijing

The cost of renting a driver in Beijing varies based on several factors.

  • Distance: Longer trips may incur higher costs.
  • Group Size: Whether you’re traveling solo or with a group, prices can vary.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger vehicles or luxury cars might have a different price range.

Depending on these factors, your trip might be around 500 RMB – 1000 RMB ($70 USD – $141 USD). This is just a rough estimate, however. Once you contact the driver, he’ll give you a quote that will be accurate for your trip.

Add my WeChat below and I can share the contact with you. Please write “Beijing city driver” in your friend request so I know why you’re adding me.

Visiting Shanghai as well? I can connect you with a Shanghai driver service for day trips to Shanghai’s nearby water towns like Wuzhen, Tonglin Zhujiajiao, and more!
